Chapter fifteen

Sophia

How the water stayed warm this long was beyond me. Fae powers were something to behold, that was for sure. No wonder they’d ruled the Earth. Humans were stupid for thinking they’d take the Fae’s power and rule themselves. The Trappers had screwed us all over. Claws sprung from the tips of my fingers as I partially shifted. I would have slaughtered them all like the Fae King and his army.

“Sophia? What’s wrong?” Rian asked, hesitating in the doorway.

“I was thinking how stupid humans are. How they put us all in this mess.”

“You can’t blame them all.”

“I know.” I sighed and retracted my claws.

“Do you need to shift?”

“No. I’m fine.” I stood in the bathtub. “Hand me a towel, please?”

Rian unhooked the plush white towel and draped it around my shoulders. He rubbed my back with the towel, then swooped the great length of my hair up into a tight knot. I stepped out of the tub and collected another towel to dry the rest of my body. Rian observed every tiny movement I made. He almost made me think he was a predator.

“Did you find me any clothes to wear?”

“Mother had gowns made for you. The maids dropped them off.”

My eyebrows rose as I wrapped the towel around my body. “Had clothes made? Maids?”

“You’re in the Fae palace. What did you think would happen here?”

In the Amazon, I was the Queen, but I was way out of my depth here with the Fae royals.

“I suppose I didn’t think about it too much.”

He crossed his arms over his chest. “I talked about my home with you.”

“You did, and I listened.” I stepped closer and placed my hands on his arms. “This—I didn’t expect this—grandness and size. You always sounded like you were talking about a cozy house.”

He unfolded his arms and took my hands in his. “It is home to me.”

“I understand, I do, but give me a bit to take it all in. I’m used to treehouses and caves. Not grand palaces and servants.”

“I’ll give you everything you want and need.”

I smiled. “Right now, I need clothes.” My stomach rumbled. “And food.”

“This way, my love.” He led me into the bedroom.

In the room’s corner sat an enormous timber wardrobe with swaths of gowns hanging from coat hangers.

“Dresses?”

“I’ll ask the seamstresses to make shorts, but you might need to help them with the pattern. They’re only used to making gowns.”

“I guess these will have to do for now.” I selected an emerald dress. The green gown reminded me of the foliage in my home jungle.

Rian took the towels from my body and returned them to the bathroom. I slid the dress over my head. The fabric was so delicate, my nipples pebbled from the soft caress against my skin. Rian’s fingers landed on the back of my collar where he began doing up the multiple buttons down my spine.

“Do you have servants to help you dress too?”

“No. Why do you ask?”

“How would I have done up the buttons without you here?”

He chuckled.
